Modern laminate is a photographic wear layer over a dense fibreboard core, and the good ones are convincing and very hard to scratch. It is the value choice for rentals, basements, playrooms and any floor that is going to take a beating.
What separates laminate that lasts from laminate that clicks apart in two years is almost entirely the preparation. It floats, so it telegraphs every dip in the subfloor and needs a real expansion gap at every wall. We flatten first and leave the gap, even where that means more work for us.
